Spring break was a few weeks ago. This is my favorite shot from then; I've been doing a lot of reflecting lately on hometowns, and what it means to originate from a place. A couple years ago, while I was a senior in high school, I am sad to say that my general hometown restlessness had turned into an ugly cousin: hometown loathing. But through the course of my gap year, and this current year here at UGA, I've found and nurtured my pride for Columbus.
It bore me, it raised me, it fed my art, and gave me some of the best friends and memories of my life. The Fountain City has not always been as exciting as it is now, but I still feel that in its earlier incarnations, Columbus was the perfect incubator. It was small enough to feel familiar, but large enough to have opportunities to capitalize on and grow from.
It also had Golden Donuts.
Perfect, fluffy rings of human ingenuity.
